MIMS (Monthly Index of Medical Specialties) consists of 11 print issues per year (Dec/Jan is combined). MIMS is the essential prescribing and drug reference guide. For over 60 years, MIMS has provided medical professionals with abbreviated package insert information on the majority of medicines licensed in South Africa, including drug dosages, warnings, NAPPI codes, contra-indications and adverse events. MIMS is the perfect clinical reference source for all healthcare professionals.
- Updated every month
- Three indices: brand name, active ingredient/trade name, trade name/active ingredient
- Structured according to MIMS pharmacological classification
Accessible via any Internet-enabled device, the new MIMS Drug Interaction Checker (MDIC) is a standalone Web application which offers an exhaustive, continually updated database that covers not just drug-to-drug interactions (trade names and actives), but also interactions with complementary medicines and potentially reactive foods. This comprehensive resource draws on the most current primary and tertiary international literature to ensure you have access to unbiased information.
The MDIC meticulously records each interaction, detailing the severity and providing guidance on the strength of the supporting evidence. This enables healthcare professionals to assess the relevance of each interaction in the context of their patient’s specific clinical picture, thereby preventing treatment failures, reducing adverse effects, and avoiding potential toxicities that could have serious, if not life-threatening, consequences.
The application’s intuitive design allows for fast searches, either by browsing through a list of potential interactions or by directly checking the compatibility of a new medication against a patient’s existing regimen. This feature is invaluable in clinical settings, where time is of the essence, and the safety of adding a new drug to a complex medication schedule must be assessed swiftly and accurately.
eMIMS is an electronic version of MIMS specifically designed for offline use on Microsoft Windows desktop computers or laptops. eMIMS is not suitable for use on Apple IOS devices.
Both mobiMIMS and eMIMS provide access to all of MIMS’ abbreviated medicine monographs as an easy-to-use, browser-based application, allowing users to browse and search medicines according to their own individual preferences - by active ingredient, product name, MIMS pharmacological classification, and manufacturer. They also include a complete ICD10 diagnostic coding browser and a comprehensive collection of patient information leaflets on medical diseases/conditions, as well as surgical procedures.
mobiMIMS and eMIMS now also include the brand new MIMS Drug Interaction Checker – a welcome tool which checks for interactions between a patient’s existing medicines and also checks for safety when a new drug is added to an existing regimen. It helps prevent unwelcome or serious (sometimes life-threatening) interactions – a major cause of hospitalisations worldwide. The MIMS Drug Interaction Checker is unique on the market in terms of its sheer size (over 1.2 million interactions and growing) and because it not only checks for drug-drug interactions, but also includes complementary ingredients (such as herbal supplements) and potentially reactive foods (such as grapefruit or sesame).

MIMS Desk Reference features a combination of fully detailed and abbreviated medicines listings of many pharmaceutical companies in South Africa. Bursting with quality content, MDR also contains comprehensive fast-reference drug tables covering most major pharmacological classifications; as well as locally relevant guidelines, including the management of acute poisoning; safe prescribing regarding children, pregnancy, obesity, porphyria, and competitive sport; informed consent in South Africa; and childhood and adult immunisation schedules. A new feature is the inclusion of product ranges of most cmpanies in Sout Africa, with useful product information.
